美術館に行く時のもう一つのお楽しみはカフェタイム。前のブログでご紹介した泉屋博古館のご近所さんのBotanic Coffee Kyotoさんが、あまりにも素敵過ぎました。内緒にしておきたい！でもこの心地よさと美味しさと感動を伝えたい！！という複雑な気持ちでご紹介します。
泉屋博古館から少し北に進むと、第三錦林小学校の目の前にある木に覆われたマンションの半地下にあります。階段を降りていくと早速かわいいテーブルと椅子の置かれたテラス席。ドアを開けるととても優しい笑顔の店長の宇野さんとスタッフさんが迎えてくださいました。
半地下と言っても、太陽の光が差し込み店内は明るく気持ちが良いのです。席に案内され、座るだけで既に幸せ気分です。
暖炉のあるスペース、奥のスペースとどこに座っても壁に掛かった絵、お皿、鏡、棚のグラスなどが目に入り、宝探しをするような気分。こんな空間を家に作りたいなと思いました。なんでこんなに落ち着くのかな？と店内を見渡しましたが、絨毯、テーブルクロスなど布が多いせいでしょうか、なんだか安心感が沸くのです。
ドリンクや食べ物はイギリスのヴィンテージのカップやお皿で提供されます。オーダーしてから銅版で焼くアップルパイは15分程待ちますが、あの心地よい空間で待っているとあっという間でした。
テーブルに届いたアップルパイはアツアツで湯気が立っています。さっくりとナイフで切っていただくとパイのパリッとした部分、しっとりとした部分甘いリンゴが相まってとても美味しい！薄くスライスしたリンゴとごろっとしたリンゴ、どちらも楽しめます。バニラアイスにもシナモンがかかっていて、最後までおいしくいただきました。
ここでは友達とおしゃべりを楽しむのも良いですが、一人のゆったりとした時間を過ごしたい気持ちになります。
モーニングを食べに朝一に行く、ミートパイをランチに食べてみる、午後のおやつにスコーンを食べる、本を読みながらポットでオーダーしたコーヒーをゆっくり飲む、などなどここでどんな風に過ごして何を食べようかと妄想が広がります。どの時間帯に行ってみたいお店です。
メニューは日英で準備されています。外国人のグループもご機嫌で入ってこられていました。
宇野さんとお話しさせていただくと、店内にあるアンティークのお皿や額などは、オーナーさんと持ちより飾られたとのこと。楽しい美術館に行ったような気持ちにもなる素敵なBotanic Coffee Kyoto。穏やかな気持ちでお出掛けください。
One of the other joys of visiting an art museum is café time. Botanic Coffee Kyoto located north to the Sen-Oku Hakukokan Museum—which I introduced in my previous blog post—was simply too wonderful. I want to keep it a secret! But I also want to share this cozy atmosphere, delicious food, and the sheer joy I felt!! With these mixed feelings, I’d like to introduce it to you.
If you head a little north from the Sen-Oku Hakukokan Museum, you’ll find it in the semi-basement of a tree-lined apartment building right across from Daisan Kinrin Elementary School. As you descend the stairs, you’ll immediately come across a terrace area furnished with cute tables and chairs. When I opened the door, the manager, Mr. Uno, and a staff, greeted me with very warm smiles.
Even though it’s a semi-basement, sunlight streams in, making the interior bright and pleasant. I was shown to my seat, and just sitting down made me feel happy.
Whether you sit by the fireplace or in the back area, your eyes are drawn to the paintings on the walls, the plates, the mirrors, and the glasses on the shelves—it feels like a treasure hunt. I found myself thinking, “I’d love to create a space like this in my own home.” I looked around the room, wondering why it felt so calming. Perhaps it’s because of all the fabric—the carpets, tablecloths, and more—but it somehow instills a deep sense of comfort.
Drinks and food are served in vintage British cups and plates. The apple pie, which is baked on a Copper Skillet after you order it, takes about 15 minutes to prepare, but the time flew by as I waited in that cozy atmosphere.
The apple pie arrived at the table piping hot, with steam rising from it. When I cut into it with a knife, the combination of the crispy crust, the moist filling, and the sweet apples was absolutely delicious! I enjoyed both thinly sliced apples and chunky pieces. The vanilla ice cream was also sprinkled with cinnamon, and I enjoyed every last bite.
While it’s nice to enjoy chatting with friends here, I also find myself wanting to spend some quiet time on my own.
I find myself daydreaming about all the ways I could spend my time here and what I might eat: going first thing in the morning for breakfast, trying a meat pie for lunch, having a scone for an afternoon snack, or reading a book while leisurely sipping coffee I ordered from a pot.
It’s the kind of place I’d love to visit at any time of day.
The menu is available in both Japanese and English. I saw a group of foreign visitors come in looking quite happy.
When I spoke with Ms. Uno, he told me that the antiques such as plates and picture frames inside the café were all brought in and displayed by the owner and him. Botanic Coffee Kyoto is such a lovely place that it almost feels like visiting a delightful art museum. If you can, I recommend visiting on your own for a quiet, peaceful experience.
