祇園や嵐山の観光エリアで見掛ける人力車、
観光客向けアトラクションといったイメージが大きいかと思います。
地元京都人なので、実は一生乗る事はないだろうと思っていたのですが（笑）、
海外から京都旅行に来た友人家族と一緒に体験してみました。
嵐山の渡月橋の北詰で俥夫をお見かけし、声を掛けてみました。
希望の時間やルートや料金を相談すると、とても柔軟に応じてくださり、
英語を話せる俥夫が担当してくださいました。
川沿いのえびす屋さんの人力車専用の乗り場へ移動して乗り込みます。
乗る時の説明も、ひと足ひと足安全に乗り込めるようにとても丁寧に説明をしてくださいます。
友人とピッタリ座り赤いひざ掛けを掛けて出発です。
いざ動き出すと、とてもなめらかであまりにスムーズな乗り心地にビックリしました。
竹林では人力車しか入れないルートがあり、周囲に誰もいない状態で写真を撮影してくださり、
賑やかな嵐山の竹林での静寂は奇跡の様な時間でした。
俥夫の皆さんは、携帯カメラの使い方をマスターし、
パノラマ効果を上手く使って思い出深い写真をとってくださいます。
走りながらも楽しく街並みの説明をしてくださいます。
常に注意を払ってくださり、人力車の俥夫＝おもてなしのプロという感想です。
俥夫の方、どなたも皆さんがとても爽やかで感じ良く、おもてなしの達人に感じました。
ほとりのお客様も何組か人力車を体験されています。
ご家族の誕生日のサプライズプレゼントにされたお客様もおられました。
2時間コースでは、途中人力車から降りて素敵な景色をバックにフォトタイムもあり、
京都の東山区の観光を満喫されていました。
最後の方は、うつらうつら寝てしまうほど気持ちが良い乗り心地だったそうです。
雨の日も濡れないように万全のシールドを施し、寒い冬でも温かい工夫がされています。
人力車に乗ることは、ただ車から街並みを見るだけではなく、
乗っている時間そのものが宝物の様な思い出の時間であることを実感できる体験でした。
You may have a big image of jinrikisha rickshaws seen in the Gion and Arashiyama sightseeing areas, as tourist attractions. As I am a local from Kyoto, I actually thought I would never ride one in my life (lol), but I tried it with a friend and her family who came to Kyoto from overseas last summer.
We saw a jinrikisha driver at the north end of Togetsukyo bridge in Arashiyama and approached him. When we discussed our desired time, route and fare, he was very flexible.
We moved to a dedicated rickshaw stop at a riverside Ebisuya and boarded the rickshaw. The rickshaw driver was very attentive and gave us a very detailed explanation so that we could board the rickshaw safely. My friend and I sat down snugly, covered ourselves with a red blanket, and we were off.
When the rickshaw started to move, I was surprised at how smooth and comfortable it was to ride. There is a route in the bamboo grove where only rickshaws are allowed, and they took pictures with no one around, and the silence in the bamboo grove in the busy Arashiyama was like a miracle. All the jinrikisha drivers had mastered the use of various kinds of cell phone cameras and were able to take memorable photos with good use of panoramic effects. They happily explained the cityscape to us as we rode along. All the jinrikisha rickshaw drivers were very fresh and pleasant, and we felt that they were masters of hospitality.
Some of Hotori’s guests enjoyed the rickshaw experience, including one who gave it as a surprise gift for a family member’s birthday. Two hours course included a photo time with a beautiful scenery in the background, and the guests enjoyed sightseeing in Higashiyama-ward, Kyoto. They said the ride was so comfortable that they fell asleep at the end.
The rickshaw is fully shielded to prevent getting wet even on rainy days, and is also designed to be warm even in cold winters.
The rickshaw ride was an experience that made me realize that riding a rickshaw is not just about seeing the cityscape from the car, but that the time spent on the ride itself is a memorable time like a treasure.
