来館された方によく「香り」のことを聞かれます。
入った瞬間「いい香り～」と鼻をくんくんしてくださる姿、心の中でにんまりしております。
お香ですか？アロマですか？と聞かれるのですが、hotoriに置かせていただいているのは、サンタマリアノヴェッラの「ポプリ」です。
和の空間にイタリアの香りというのは意外かもしれませんが、フィレンツェの丘に自然に咲く草花や植物の実などを熟成させたこのポプリ、木造建築の京町家にはとてもよく馴染みます。

hotoriは100年以上前から大切にされてきた古い町家。
その良さを存分に活かすため、リノベーションの際も自然素材をふんだんに取り入れました。
柱や床に使われている天然木の香り、土壁や漆喰が生み出す絶妙な湿度感と溶け合うことで、ポプリそのままの香りではなく「hotoriの香り」として皆さまの鼻腔に届くのだと思います。
「ポプリそのものの香り」が気になる方は、和室の香炉のフタを開けてくんくんしてみてくださいね。
森林浴で感じる清々しい森の香り。
それは樹木が害虫や菌から自らの身を守るために放出する「フィトンチッド」という芳香成分だそうです。
伐採され、木材となったあとも長く作用するフィトンチッドは、自律神経の安定やストレスホルモンの減少、空気の浄化作用など人間にもうれしい効果ばかり。
hotoriで皆さんが感じてくださる「心地よさ」「リラックス感」「リフレッシュ感」はこのフィトンチッドによるところが大きいのかなと日々思います。

天然ヒバの消臭・脱臭効果は市販の化学的な消臭剤よりはるかに優れたもの。
自然の力というのはすごい。すごいのに、私たち人間にまで優しい。

The moment they enter the hotori, we are always pleased to see them sniffing and smiling.
Is it incense? Aroma?
We have a potpourri of Santa Maria Novella in our hotori.
It may seem surprising to have an Italian aroma in a Japanese space, but this potpourri, made from flowers and fruits of plants that naturally bloom in the hills of Florence, blends well with the rich wood of the Kyomachiya.
hotori is an old machiya that has been cherished for over 100 years.
In order to take full advantage of its beauty, natural materials were used in abundance during the renovation.
The aroma of the natural wood used for the pillars and floors, combined with the exquisite sense of humidity created by the earthen walls and plaster, creates an aroma that reaches your nostrils as “the aroma of hotori,” rather than the aroma of potpourri itself.
If you are interested in the scent of potpourri itself, please open the lid of the incense pot in our Japanese-style room and smell it.
The fresh scent of a forest that you can feel when you take a walk in a forest.
It is said to be an aromatic component called “phytoncide” that trees release to protect themselves from pests and fungi.
Phytoncide, which remains active long after the trees have been harvested and turned into lumber, has many beneficial effects on humans, such as stabilizing the autonomic nervous system, decreasing stress hormones, and purifying the air.
We believe that the “comfort,” “relaxation,” and “refreshment” you feel at hotori is largely due to these phytoncides.
