京都市内のど真ん中、四条烏丸エリアに六角堂があります。地元の人からは「六角さん」と親しみを込めて呼ばれている六角形の本堂がある天台系のお寺です。ビル街の中にありますが、そこだけがとても澄んだ空気で、常に水の流れる音が聞こえてくる街中のオアシスのようなお寺です。私自身何度足を運んだことでしょうか。買い物ついでに立ち寄る事もあれば、桜を見に行くことも、そしてただシンプルにあの空間に身を置きたいという衝動にかられて参拝することも多々あります。とにかく心を癒してくれる空間なのです。
ビル街の中にあることを思えば決して大きいとは言えない敷地ですが、まるでテーマパーク内にアトラクションが沢山あってどれも体験しておきたいと思えるような、何度行っても飽きないほど見どころが沢山詰まった場所なのです。このお気に入りの場所は、大切な海外の友達を案内する時には外せない街中のスポットでもあります。
境内に入り、龍の手水舎で手を清め、ロウソクを二本お供えしてお参りするのが個人的な慣わしです。境内左手の可愛らしいニットの帽子と前掛けを着用したお地蔵さん達がずらりと並んでいる姿をながめつつありがたい気持ちになりながら北側の池に向かい、白鳥が元気にしているか確認します。境内には鳩も沢山いるので、日向ぼっこをしている様子を見るとこちらものんびりした気分になります。十六羅漢さん達のかわいらしいお顔を拝見しつつ、一番好きなスポット一言願い地蔵さんに手を合わせにいくのがお気に入りです。
春の桜のシーズンは、羅漢さんの後方にある階段を上ると綺麗な枝垂れ桜をゆっくりと愛でる事ができます。ビルに囲まれつつ、その中にあるオアシスを眺める時間はとても貴重で癒されます。鎌倉時代に親鸞聖人は六角堂に参籠し、浄土真宗を開くきっかけを得たそうで、天台系ではない新しい仏教もここから生まれたことを思うと、大変貴重な聖域であるなと思うのです。

Right in the heart of Kyoto, in the Shijo Karasuma area, stands Rokkakudo Temple. Affectionately called “Rokkaku-san” by locals, this Tendai sect temple features a distinctive hexagonal main hall. Nestled amidst skyscrapers, it feels like an oasis in the city—a place with remarkably clear air where the constant sound of flowing water can always be heard. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve visited myself. Sometimes I stop by while shopping, other times I go to see the cherry blossoms, and often I visit simply because I feel an urge to immerse myself in that space. It’s a place that truly heals the soul.
Though the lot isn’t particularly large considering it’s nestled within a cityscape of buildings, it’s packed with so many highlights that you never tire of visiting—much like a theme park filled with attractions you’ll want to experience them all. This favorite spot is also an essential downtown destination when showing around my dear friends from overseas.
Upon entering the temple grounds, I personally make it a habit to purify my hands at the water basin where water flows from the dragon’s mouth, offer two candles, pray and pay my respects. As I gaze at the row of adorable Jizo statues wearing knitted hats and aprons lining the left side of the grounds, a feeling of gratitude washes over me. I then head toward the pond on the north side to check if the swans are doing well. Many pigeons also inhabit the grounds and seeing them basking in the sun puts me in a relaxed mood too. I enjoy viewing the adorable faces of the Sixteen Rakan Arhats statues, and finally I stand in front of my favorite spot the One-Wish Jizo statue and pray.
During the spring cherry blossom season, climbing the stairs behind the Sixteen Rakan Arhats statues allows you to slowly admire the beautiful weeping cherry trees. Surrounded by buildings, the time spent gazing upon this oasis within is truly precious and healing.
It is said that during the Kamakura period, Shinran Shonin stayed at Rokkakudo Temple, finding the inspiration to establish Jodo Shinshu Sect. Reflecting on how a new form of Buddhism, distinct from the Tendai Sect, was born here, I can realizes this is a profoundly sacred sanctuary.
