「場所を巡る旅から、人と出会う旅へ。」をテーマに運営されているフッドトラベルさんの企画に、
ほとりチームで参加させていただきました。
今回伺ったのは、東本願寺のすぐ側で104年続く珠数店 株式会社神戸珠数店。
神戸珠数店さんのお名前を目にする機会が今まで無かったのですが、
仏具屋さんでの販売が八割を占めるそうで、
百貨店で購入する珠数も実は神戸珠数店の品であったことが判明。
スタッフ達も普段お世話になっていたことがわかりました。
ショールームには沢山の美しい珠数がディスプレイされていました。
宗派ごと形が違うことが一目でわかります。箱に詰める作業をされる横で、
値段を付けられないような貴重な珠数も特別に見せていただいたり、
世界から集められた、木、天然石、サンゴなどの素材について説明をしていただいたり、
初めて知る奥深い珠数の世界に驚きの連続でした。
ここ数年でオリジナル商品を次々に出されています。
ウイスキーの樽の木を使った珠数、藍色に染めた深い紺色が美しい珠数、清水焼を使った珠数、
どれも今まで見たことがなかった新しいデザインとお洒落さを感じました。
そういった新商品を開発される際に、常にアンテナを張って情報収集をされているのかと
お尋ねしたところ、頭の中で「こんなことやってみたい」と思っていたら
ウイスキーの製造者さんに出会ったり、藍染めの作家さんと知り合ったりと
ご縁が向こうからやってくるというお話をしてくださいました。
日頃から人とのつながりを大切にされている神戸さんらしいエピソードだと思いました。
珠数は全ての工程が手作業であり、多くの職人さんの技術が合わさって作られています。
京都市「未来の名匠」である京念珠製造師 栗塚さんがもの凄い速さで糸を四つ編しながら
珠数を修繕されている様子を見学しながら、私達は興味津々で沢山の質問をさせていただきました。
お坊さんが指で珠を数えながらお経を唱えたり、珠数をこすり合わせるその使い心地を大切にしながら
丁寧に心を込めて修繕されていました。珠数作りは五年程かかってようやく“さま”になるそうです。
大変根気のいる作業ですが、念珠は一つ一つが違うものなので飽きる事はなく、
実演の機会があれば、楽しんでもらえる見せ方を考えることもあると栗塚さんはおっしゃっていました。
場所を変えて、渉成園のお茶室で神戸さんと対談をする時間をいただきました。
池の水面の光がお茶室の天井にゆらゆらと映り、とても素敵な空間で珠数作りについてお話を伺いました。
珠数を通して多くの人の心を豊かにしたいという熱い思いを秘めながら、
珠数の様な丸い心で人と繋がっていく、繋がりながら円になっていく、
ということを社員にも伝えながら、良い物を使って常に革新していくという神戸さんの
経営者としての誠実さと真摯さに感銘を受けました。
オリジナル商品で差別化を図り、販路も仏具屋さん以外のルートを広めたい、SNSで発信していき、
日本全国皆に珠数を使ってほしいという神戸さんの熱い思いをお伺いできました。
パワーストーン屋さんと神戸珠数店の違いは、同じ石の珠でも見えないところに気を遣っている
職人さんの思いが込められているとのこと。
同じ、穴をあけて糸を通すという作業でも、穴の中を磨いてから糸を通すという
職人の技が隠されており、また作成段階から祈りを込められて作っておられるそうです。
職人さんの技術や思いが込められている、人の手の価値を感じる事のできる珠数を作っておられるのです。
ロザリオ製作の為の木の珠も取り扱っておられます。
宗教を超えて、人とのご縁をつないで会社を経営されているお話を聞き、
また新しいアイデアの詰まった素敵な珠数を作り出されるのだろうなと楽しみに思いました。
We visited Kanbe juzu(=prayer beads) shop with 104 years history, located close to Higashi Honganji Temple.
There were so many kinds of beautiful prayer beads on display in the showroom. The materials are such as wood, natural stones, and coral collected from all over the world. It’s indeed a deep world!
In the past several years, they have been producing original products one after another. Prayer beads made from whiskey barrel wood, beads with a beautiful deep navy blue color dyed with indigo, and beads made from Kiyomizu-yaki porcelain all had a new design and stylishness that I had never seen before. When I asked Mr.Kanbe, the president of the company if he always has his antenna up and gathers information when developing such new products, he told us that when he thinks “I want to try something like this” in his mind, he meets a whiskey maker, or gets acquainted with an indigo-dyeing artist, etc., and the connections come from the other side. I thought this episode was very typical of Mr. Kanbe, who always values his relationships with people.
The entire process of making prayer beads is done by hand, combining the skills of many craftsmen.
While observing Ms. Kurizuka, a “Kyoto City future master” prayer beads craftsperson, repairing prayer beads while weaving threads into four braids at a tremendous speed, we were very curious and asked many questions. The repair work was carried out with great care, taking into consideration the comfort of the prayer beads as the monks used them while chanting sutras, counting them on their fingers and rubbing the beads together.
Mr. Kurizuka said that although this is a very patient process, she never gets tired of it because each prayer bead is unique, and when she has a chance to demonstrate, she tries to think of ways to show the prayer beads in a way that people can enjoy.
We changed locations and had time for a conversation with Mr. Kanbe in the tea room at Shoseien. The light from the surface of the pond reflected on the ceiling of the tea room.
He is passionate to enrich the hearts of many people through prayer beads.
I am sure that he will create more wonderful prayer beads filled with new ideas beyond religion.
