京都には大小様々な美術館がありますが、今日はとても珍しい根付美術館をご紹介します。
根付はなんとなくキーホルダー？ストラップ？という位のイメージをお持ちの方も多いかもしれません。私も和風のキーホルダーというイメージでしっかりとは理解をしていませんでした。
根付とは和装の時代に、ポケット代わりに小物を持ち歩く為の巾着や印籠箱の紐に取り付けて帯に挟み込み落ちないようにしていた留め具でした。和服の不便さを補う実用的な道具だったのです。それが、時代の流れと共に装飾性が重要視され最終的には美術工芸品の域にまで達したものです。
根付美術館は、ほとりからは阪急電車又はバスと徒歩で30分程の壬生エリアにあります。
壬生寺の真正面に位置する格式高い『旧神崎家住宅』が根付美術館です。
京都市の有形指定文化財で、京都市内に現存する数少ない武家屋敷と京町屋の特性を併せた邸宅で、根付だけではなく、その建物や庭も含めて一緒に楽しむ事の出来る歴史を感じるお屋敷です。
門をくぐり、綺麗に手入れされた庭を通り左手へと進みます。チケットを購入して、靴を脱いであがります。
建物内部は当然ながら純和風。竹細工の襖、美しい唐紙の襖、網代天井など匠の技があちこちに散りばめられている贅沢な空間です。お掃除の行き届いていてピカピカの綺麗な空間でとても気分よく、そして背筋が伸びる気持ちで鑑賞しました。
ガラスケースの中の根付は、どれも約4センチ四方のサイコロに収まる位の小ささですが、あまりに精巧でとても繊細でどうやって彫るの？と職人さんの技術力と根気と、目の良さを感じました。私にとって、眼鏡を掛けるかルーぺを使わないと見えないレベルの細やかさでした。
多くの根付作家さん達の写真も展示されていました。小さな根付を根気よく製作される素晴らしい職人である作家さん達、20代の若い方もおられて、斬新でかわいいデザインも沢山ありました。
5,000点を超える収蔵品から1か月毎にテーマが変わり約400点が展示される企画展。訪問した6月は金工・象嵌の格調展でした。日常生活の中ではほぼ見る機会が無い工芸の分野。これからも、毎月趣向を凝らした企画展を楽しむ事ができます。7月は『芸能の華』展、8月は『妖怪たちの夏休み』展、9月は『侍と花魁』展となんだかおもしろそうな企画展です。
約3~5センチメートルの小さな根付。しかしながら“手のひらの中の小宇宙”とも呼ばれる細やかな（細やか過ぎる位）芸術作品。是非、沢山の人に知ってもらいたいと思う場所です。
帰り道は老舗和菓子屋の京都鶴屋さんに立ち寄りました。初夏から和菓子屋さんで発売される「鮎」のお菓子は、それぞれのお菓子屋さんで特徴のあるお菓子。こちらの鮎は「保津の瀬」という涼しげな名前で、しっぽがくびれが美しい形でした。薄皮で半透明の求肥、冷たい緑茶を美味しくいただきましたよ。
Kyoto has many museums of various sizes. Today, I would like to introduce a unique Netsuke Museum.
Is Netsuke similar to key chains or straps? Many people may picture netsuke as a key ring or strap. I had a similar image, but I did not fully understand them.
During the era of Kimono, traditional Japanese clothing, netsuke were used as clasps attached to purse or inro box strings to carry small items instead of pockets. They were inserted into belts to prevent them from falling off. They were a practical tool that compensated for the inconvenience of kimonos. Over time, the decorative value of these items became more important, and they eventually became works of art.
The Netsuke Museum is located in the Mibu area, about 30 minutes from hotori by Hankyu train or bus and on foot.
It is located in the prestigious Former Kanzaki Family Residence, which is just in front of Mibudera Temple.
It is one of the few residences in Kyoto City that combines the characteristics of a samurai residence and a Kyoto townhouse. Kyoto City has designated it as a tangible cultural property.
After passing through the gate, walk through the beautifully landscaped garden to the left. Purchase a ticket and take off my shoes to enter.
The interior of the building is pure, traditional Japanese style. It is a luxurious space with bamboo and karakami sliding doors and an Ajiro ceiling, showcasing the skills of master craftsmen. It is very clean and shiny space.
The netsukes in the glass cases are small enough to fit on a 4 cm square die, yet they are so intricate and delicate that I wondered how they were carved. I was impressed by the craftsmanship, patience, and attention to detail. As an elderly person who needs reading glasses, I needed to wear them or use a loupe to see the netsuke.
The collection contains over 5,000 items, and the theme changes every month. Approximately 400 items are exhibited each month. When I visited the museum in June, the exhibition was entitled “The Preciousness of Goldsmithing and Zogan (Inlaying).” This craft is rarely seen in daily life. Other interesting exhibitions include “Brilliance of traditional arts” in July, “Summer Fun for Yokai Monsters” in August, and “Samurai and Oiran(courtesans)” in September.
Netsukes are small, measuring approximately three to five centimeters. They are also called “a microcosm in the palm of your hand,” fine works of art. This is a place that I would like many people to know about.
On the way home, I stopped by Kyoto Tsuruya, a long-established Japanese confectionery shop. Ayu (sweetfish) sweets, which have been on sale at Japanese confectionery shops since early summer, are unique sweets at each confectionery shop. The sweetfish here was very beautifully shaped with a nubby tail. I enjoyed the thin-skinned, translucent gyuhi and cold green tea. Please try it in Kyoto in summer!
