Row the boat to the teahouse

2024.05.03

Row the boat to the teahouse

I was getting hungry after the fresh greenery walk in Okusaga, so I headed for the main event of today.
From Togetsukyo Bridge, head a little upstream along the Katsura River.
When you see this yellow sign, go down to the riverbank.

What a cute, retro, simple rowboat.
The “Kotogase Teahouse” written on the boat is today’s lunch place.
Row the boat, which is only for the teahouse customers, to the teahouse on the other side of the river.
There is no boatman, so you have to do it by yourself.

It only takes a few minutes to row the boat.
The lady at the teahouse pulls the boat in and you are ashore.
I felt a sense of accomplishment of having crossed the river by boat!
The sense of accomplishment and the cheerful welcome from the old man and woman made the moment of our arrival enjoyable.

All seats have a river view (of course).
The atmosphere and the view are both great.

Yudofu, grilled squid, river fish tempura, and daytime beer.
It’s just made my day perfect.

There are huge lines at all the stores around the Togetsukyo Bridge, but once you get here, there are very few people.
I thought that the foreign customers who have found their way here were lucky!
And the cheerful ladies, who speak only Japanese even to foreigners, showed me the secret principle of hospitality.

With these tipsy thoughts in my mind, my Arashiyama Okusaga walk is over, having satisfied both my stomach and my senses.

Kotogase Teahouse is currently open only on weekends and holidays.
You can walk across the Togetukyo Bridge, but for a more enjoyable experience, I recommend take a boat.
