ほとりから徒歩5分の建仁寺。京都最古の禅寺で、ご宿泊のゲストにも人気です。
祇園エリアにあることから、いつも周辺は多くの観光客で賑わっています。
建仁寺の双龍図を描いた画家の小泉淳作氏の生誕100年記念ということで
『双龍の画家 小泉淳作展』が開催されていますので、足を運んでみました。
建仁寺は広い石庭に囲まれ、広々としています。
大雄苑と呼ばれる枯山水の前庭を見ながら瞑想をしたい気分で一度縁側に座ってみましたが、
あまりの暑さにすぐに立ちました。気持ちの良い季節に再度伺いゆったりと過ごしてみたいです。
小泉画伯は慶応大学文学部を中退し、東京藝術大学日本画科に入学したという面白い経歴をお持ちで、
生涯を通じて日本画、山水画、花卉画、と幅広い画風で作品を残しています。
還暦を過ぎてようやく絵が売れ始め「遅咲きの日本画家」と呼ばれているそうです。
有名な双龍図はうす暗く高い天井の法堂にふさわしいダイナミックで力強い作品です。
小書院、大書院には様々な作品が並んでいました。
東大寺の枝垂れ桜は細やかで繊細、蓮池の襖絵はピンクの濃淡が明るい気持ちにさせてくれます。
同じ建仁寺の塔頭 禅居庵（ぜんきょあん）摩利支天堂に移動し鑑賞した、猫や虎、京茄子や蕪の
作品はとても愛らしさを感じました。まるで違う画家の作品をみている感覚になりました。
お寺に参拝しつつ沢山の絵画を鑑賞できて、まるで美術館にも行ったような大満足の建仁寺でした。
『双龍の画家 小泉淳作展』は9月23日まで開催されています。
お寺と美術館が両方好きな方に是非お薦めです。
Kenninji Temple is a 5-minute walk from hotori. It is the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto and is popular among our guests. Being located in the Gion area, the surrounding area is always crowded with many tourists.
I visited the “ Junsaku Koizumi, Painter of Twin Dragons” exhibition being held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Junsaku Koizumi, the artist who painted the twin dragons in Kenninji Temple.
The temple is surrounded by a large stone garden and is spacious.
I tried to sit on the veranda to meditate while looking at the dry landscape garden called “Daiouen,” but it was too hot and I had to leave immediately. I would like to visit the temple again in a pleasant season and spend a relaxing time.
Koizumi left the Faculty of Letters at Keio University and entered the Department of Japanese Painting at Tokyo University of Arts
He is said to have been called a “late-blooming Japanese painting painter,” as his paintings finally began to sell after he passed his 60th birthday.
Twin Dragons in the Dharma Hall is a dynamic and powerful work that is appropriate for the high, dark ceiling of the Dharma Hall.
Various works are displayed in the small and large lecture rooms. “Weeping cherry tree” is detailed and delicate, and the fusuma, paper sliding door paintings of the lotus pond are delightful in different colors of pink.
Moving to Marishitendo, the Zenkyoan temple within the Kenninji, I found the cat, tiger, eggplant, and turnip works to be very charming.
I felt as if I were looking at the work of different artists.
I was happy to see so many paintings while visiting the temple, as if I had been to an art museum as well. The exhibition, “The Painter of the Twin Dragons: Junsaku Koizumi,” will be on view through September 23. I highly recommend this exhibition to anyone who loves both temples and art museums.
