ほとりから徒歩15分の清水五条エリアに、河井寛次郎記念館があります。
陶芸家でありつつ、彫刻、デザイン、書、詩、詞、随筆などの分野でも作品を残しているマルチな芸術家。
日常の暮らしにあふれている品々に美を見出す『民藝運動』の主要メンバーである河井寛次郎の
自宅兼仕事場が、当時のままの姿で一般に公開されています。
外観は京町家。横幅の狭いうなぎの寝床の京町家、というよりは結構横幅があり大きな邸宅です。
寛次郎自らが設計した建物は、一歩中に入ると艶のある古い木の温かみと重厚さを感じられる古民家
といった雰囲気ですが、作陶や絵付けを行った大きな中庭を中心に奥深い構造をしていて、
とても贅沢な作りでした。
最初に入ったいろり奥の和室では、記念館のアイドルさび猫のえきちゃんが昼寝をしていました。
飼い猫では無く、通い猫だそうです。
所定のお気に入りの場所で、この日も気持ちよさそうに昼寝をしていました。
陳列棚の数々の作品を見ていると、陶芸だけでも難しい世界なのに、よくぞ木工品のデザイン、
制作、彫刻まで自身で行うという芸術の幅の広さに驚くばかりでした。
展示室から奥へ進み階段を上がると先ずは小さな素焼き窯があります。
更に木の椅子が置かれている休憩室を抜けると、巨大な登り窯（共同窯）がありました。
あまりに大きくて、ここで一度にどれだけの陶器が焼けるのだろうかと想像してみました。
京都の台所や料理屋さんのキッチンでよく見かける『阿多古祀符 火廼要慎 』が手前の小さな窯にも、
奥の登り窯にも貼ってありました。いかにも京都らしい御札です。
母屋の2階でも寛次郎の作品を沢山楽しむ事ができ、あちこちに飾られたお花もどれも素敵でした。
外国のゲストにも人気です。訪れたこの日も、幼稚園位の女の子を含むフランス人家族が
ゆったりと楽しんでおられたのが印象的でした。外国人の心にも響く、日本の民藝作品、
とても心地の良い空間に身を置くことが出来たことが嬉しい一日となりました。
ほとりからお散歩気分で行ける記念館、おススメです！
Kawai Kanjiro’s house is located in the Kiyomizu Gojo area, a 15-minute walk from hotori.
Kanjiro was a multi-talented artist who, in addition to being a potter, also left works in the fields of sculpture, design, calligraphy, poetry, and essays. His home and workplace are open to the public in his original state. The building, designed by Kanjiro himself, has the atmosphere of an old private house with the warmth and massiveness of shiny old wood once you step inside, but it is a very luxurious structure with a large courtyard in the center and a deep structure.
In the Japanese-style room behind the irori, sunken hearth where I first entered, a rusty cat named Eki-chan was taking a nap comfortably.
Looking at the numerous works on the display shelves, I was amazed at the breadth of his artistry, which includes the design, production, and sculpture of woodwork, a feat that would be difficult to accomplish in the world of ceramics alone.
At the far end of the site was a huge climbing kiln (communal kiln). It was so large that I wondered how much pottery could be fired here at one time.
On the second floor of the main house, I could enjoy many of Kanjiro’s works.
It is also popular among foreign guests. On the day I visited, I was impressed by a French family with a kindergarten-aged girl who was enjoying themselves in a relaxed atmosphere. It was a pleasant day for me to be in a very comfortable space with Japanese folk art works that resonate with the hearts of foreigners as well.
I strongly recommend this memorial museum!
