The rainy season has arrived much earlier than usual.
How can I enjoy Kyoto on rainy days?
This is the most frequently asked question during this season.
I think it is standard answer to recommend indoor spots such as museums and art galleries.
However, in early summer, fresh green leaves and branches are growing, flowers are opening one after another, and gardens are at their best season.
The beautifully arranged stones and mosses in Zen temples become even more vibrant when wet with rain.
That is why I recommend to visit temples and shrines on rainy days to admire the gardens.
Ryosokuin, Kenninji Temple, is the oldest Zen temple in Japan.
The garden is open to the public on special occasions during the rainy season when “Hangesho” (orb of lizard’s tail) are in bloom.
It is only a five-minute walk from Hotori, so you don’t have to wear rain boots.
You can enjoy the garden from inside the sacred temple without getting wet.
You can feel the fragrance of incense, listen to the sound of the rain, and simply watch the ripples of the rain fall on the pond.
Please enjoy this happy and abundant “time to do nothing”.
